Mobile tariffs will be reduced, says Raja - Sandeep Joshi

NEW DELHI: Communications and Information Technology Minister A. Raja said on Friday that his priority would be to bring down mobile tariffs to 10 paise for local calls and 25 paise for national calls.

He said the 3G spectrum auction would be completed at the earliest.

“There is still great scope for reduction in mobile tariffs in India, which are the cheapest in the world. Entry of more mobile service providers and our pro-consumer policies will help bring down mobile tariffs to 10 paise for local calls and 25 paise for STD. This is high on my agenda.”

Currently, a subscriber pays 40 paise-Re.1 a minute for local calls and Re.1-Rs. 2 for STD calls.

Mr. Raja, who left for Chennai after the swearing-in ceremony to meet his party leader M. Karunanidhi, will take charge next week.
